Indiana Pacers Training Facility

a dual-purpose green roof atop a professional sports facility

St. Vincent’s Training Center is a five-story, state-of-the-art facility located in downtown Indianapolis that houses the Indiana Pacers’ training facility, a St. Vincent’s Medical Facility, and an 8,500 SF Omni Green Roof™ which provides ecological benefits and visual respite as well as food production.

The green roof is intended to not only attract top-level talent to the Pacers franchise, but also set the organization apart from other professional sports teams. This dual-purpose green roof is part native prairie and part edible garden, with 3,200 SF devoted to wildflowers, crops, and plants indigenous to Indiana which attracts pollinators for food production. Crops initially installed included tomatoes, basil, beets, bok choy, carrots, green beans, kale, turnips, radish, and Swiss chard. Additionally, the system is intended to regulate the building’s temperature by preventing the roof from experiencing dramatic temperature changes during the summer and winter, which provides cost savings while also managing stormwater on the site.

The Indiana Pacers Training Facility is an example of how professional sports facilities – or any sort of structure – located in urban areas where farmland is minimal can positively contribute to the surrounding community by adding green spaces that promote sustainability and provide agriculture production that otherwise would not occur.
