The Roof Crop

building community & fostering education through green roof farming systems

The Roof Crop flagship farm is a green roof farm rooted in Omni’s comprehensive green roof technology. It is a fully-functioning, commercial-scale rooftop farm located in Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood that is a space for food, fellowship, education, and employment. The roof is maintained and marketed by The Roof Crop, LLC, a group dedicated to innovation in urban agriculture.

The Roof Crop is a network of three connected green roofs, each using Omni Ecosystem’s unique food meadow system. The food meadow is a polyculture system combining perennial meadow plants and food crops to establish a healthy nutrient cycle and generate bountiful harvests. Growing in just three to eight inches of ultra lightweight Omni Infinity Media, the roof produces an impressive yield of 44 different crops in more than 100 varieties including green beans, apples, potatoes, radishes, turnips and raspberries.

Every week during harvest season, produce from the roof is picked, processed, and packaged on-site before it’s sold to more than 20 local restaurants, illustrating the ability for urban agriculture to increase accessibility to farmers in urban environments.

The Roof Crop illustrates the vast benefits and capabilities of green roofs, particularly those with a strong farming system. Green roofs are often viewed as passive systems, but The Roof Crop is activated daily through various educational, social, and recreational programming which ultimately fostered a sense of community and socially ties people together while also acting as a living laboratory for experimentation.
