Brookfield Zoo - North American Prairie Aviary

creating a new habitat for the threatened Sandhill Crane and Prairie Chickens at Brookfield Zoo

The new aviary at the Brookfield Zoo is designed to be a haven for both the Sandhill Crane and Greater Prairie Chicken, with lush vegetation, water bodies, and landscape features that reflect their natural habitat.

Omni Workshop designed the landscape to encourage the crane's natural beak-probing behavior, as well as the foraging activities of the prairie chickens closer to the floor. Balancing the preservation of views into the exhibit with providing a variety of options for the animals within the exhibit was critical to the thoughtful execution of the design.
