West Loop Rooftop Garden
an urban savanna in the sky, offering a tranquil oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
The existing 2,000-square-foot rooftop terrace in Chicago's vibrant Fulton Market featured a deck and pergola, but its landscape had become overgrown and filled with weeds. The redesign transformed the space into a lush sanctuary, combining prairie-style elements with evergreen and ornamental trees, low-lying sedges, grasses, and flowering perennials.
Driven by a desire for privacy, sweeping city views, and environmental harmony, the new planting design enhanced the terrace, framing views of the skyline while screening neighboring buildings. Ten evergreen and ornamental trees, along with seventeen shrubs and vine-covered metal screens, create a secluded retreat that offers privacy without sacrificing views.
Key plantings—such as Arborvitae, Musclewood, American Hazelnut, Black Chokeberry, Juniper, and Sumac—ensure year-round beauty and support native wildlife. To make the terrace more functional, the redesign also incorporated the existing pergola, along with comfortable seating areas that encourage gathering, lounging, and dining amidst the greenery.
