International Square
a redefined hub boasts the largest living wall in the nation's capital
The District’s largest living wall serves as the centerpiece in the renovation of this early 80’s icon. Approximately 25,000 plants, coordinated by the color of their variety, produce the effect of a floating, camouflage supergraphic delineating the building’s skylit atrium.
The organization of these plant mixes responds to the varying light qualities within the interior court. The studied and detailed placement required the use of a flexible, modular system. Eighteen planting modules were developed to be strategically arranged then suspended on a custom armature. The practical need for drainage is fulfilled by an innovative system that produces vertical flow.
Twenty years after its inception, this urban hub is revitalized as a culinary marketplace and event space.
