EMME
harmonizing urban luxury with urban agriculture
Emme is a sophisticated and sustainable apartment building located in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood that harmonizes urban luxury with urban agriculture. An 8,000 SF Omni Green Roof sits atop the 199-unit structure and functions as a rooftop farm that grows numerous crops — including eggplant, apples, and tomatoes — and also combats issues related to climate change and sustainability. Emme's rooftop farm makes creative and impactful use of the rooftop space while providing tenants with a unique visual amenity and bringing a local farming source to an otherwise urban area.
Situated along one of Chicago's premier dining corridors, Emme's rooftop farm serves a hyperlocal food source for the nearby, award-winning restaurants. In addition to adding unique, aesthetic beauty to the rooftop, it also addresses climate change by mitigating the urban heat effect, managing stormwater, and reducing energy use.
Clear views of the third-floor farm and crop collection process inspire curiosity in the building's tenants, enabling them to feel a greater connection to the neighborhood. Tenants are exposed to several onsite farm events and even have the option to receive regular bundles of produce from the farm via a subscription. The rooftop farm ultimately drives home Emme's sustainability principles, which are rooted in its mission.
